First weekend results

February 24-25, 2001
Day Class Qualify Race
Saturday Pro7 Qualified 3rd Moved to 2nd at the start, dropped back to 4th, then finished 2nd
E/Production Qualified 1st in class, 2nd overall in a light rain Finished First in class on a wet track
Sunday Pro7 Qualified 3rd (second place car was a different one) Moved to second in a few laps, stayed there most of the race. Rain started about half race, and the car was a real hand-full in the wet (not enough tread), finished 4th (they had more tread).
E/Production Qualified 1st in class Finished 1st in class in fairly heavy rain for the whole race

Not a bad first weekend with a new car at all -- Two firsts, a second and a fourth. No real problems with the car at all. Only real thing was we found out you CAN NOT run Pro7 front camber with racing slicks -- the left front slick overheated and BLEW on the first practice warm-up lap!! So the dry track runs in E/P were with slicks in the rear, and shaved Toyo's in the front, with a 48IDA on the stock 12A engine. The raining Saturday E/P qualifying and Sunday E/P race were with full tread Toyo street tires!!

That's 2 hours of full racing (four one-half hour races) plus all the qualifying and practice sessions !!

April 29
Class Qualify Race
Pro7 + All the Improved Touring Classes (43!! car field) 1st by over a second, but time was thrown out for passing under the yellow (still not sure I agree with that call) -- so we started ALL the way at the back. 4th in class - passed ~28 cars and set a lap record.

May 28
Class Qualify Race
Pro7 2nd 1st -- got by the other car on the first lap, and stayed in the lead.
E/P 1st A "real" E/Production car showed up, so I finished 2nd.

June 23 and 24
Day Class Qualify Race
Saturday Pro7 Had fuel problems (trash in fuel plugged filter), car would not run a lap. So I started LAST in a field of 38 cars! Actually finished 7th, but after the stewards handed out a bunch of penalties, then reversed half of them, I ended up 5th.
E/P With 2 "real" E/P cars there, and temperatures between 103 and 105 degrees, we decided not to run. (Saved buying a pair of slicks, entry fee, gas, etc., and car was running real hot)
Sunday E/P 3rd Distant 3rd with carb problems (w/o problems I still would have been 3rd)
Still in the points lead.
Pro7 4th Worked my way into the lead in a few laps, and stayed there (1st) +set a new lap record.

Keeps me in the points lead by 6 points.

September 1, 2, and 3
Saturday Pro7 Won:
E/P Finished 2nd
Sunday Pro7 Front row start, car popped out of gear on fast sweeper lap 1 - went off BIG time, came back on last, finished 6th.
E/P 3rd
Monday
(LONG, HOT Weekend)
Pro7 Engine was cooked on Sunday (as well as trans problem). Spent a LONG evening changing engine and trans. Start Monday was where you finished Sunday. New engine would not run below 6k (carb problem), running hot, finished 4th.
E/P Finished 2nd (Engine ran ok with Weber, but overheating and losing compression)

October 12 and 13
Saturday Pro7 Won from Pole
(+New Lap Record)
E/P 2nd
Sunday Pro7 Needed to win to keep Championship hopes alive: Started from pole, wound up 2nd gear, went to 3rd and there was nothing there! - End of race, end of Championship! -- DNF race, finished 2nd in points for the year.

November 3rd, 3-Hour Enduro
(Entered in Pro7 Class)
Since I had no chance to win the Championship, I co-drove with Bob Neal (3rd in points) in his car. Nice easy, un-eventful run -- which is how you win an enduro. No problems, started first in class, and stayed there for the whole race.
